Louis Pasteur The Scientific Field Of Biology - 2860 Words
Louis Pasteur: The French 19th century biologist, Louis Pasteur, is responsible for many scientific advancements, particularly in the field of biology. He has become one of the most well-known figures in the science of biology for having a massive effect on the direction of scientific thinking. He was a key figure in contributing to the germ theory of disease. His historical experiments proved his theories, and changed the way the world views the fundamental principles of microbiology. One experiment that he sought to complete was one to find out what the cause was for fermentation. He wanted to see what would happen if he passed oxygen through a fermenting liquid. The oxygen stopped the fermentation process, and the broth continuedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The straight tube would allow for air-borne bacteria to fall straight into the broth while the swan neck would trap the bacteria in the trough. He did this to try and disprove the widely accepted theory of spontaneous generation. At the time, this changed the whole concept of microbiological reproduction and brought in a new way of thinking. While both of these experiments carried out by Louis Pasteur had a large effect on the way people perceived the world of science, they both did it in slightly different ways. For Pasteurââ¬â¢s experiment that disproved the spontaneous generation theory, it completely changed the way scientists thought about life for centuries before. Not only that, but it simply changed the way people viewed the world. He was able to show that bacteria were not able to form on its own without a source, and that it needed a catalyst (in this case, microorganisms from the air). This is an example of a scientific advancement, improving our knowledge and understanding in the field of biology. Not only did it disprove spontaneous generation on a microbiological scale, but made everybody think about the entire theory pertaining to other animals such as maggots and rats. This advancement lead to people rethinking the entire concept of animal reproduction, and was a stepping stone for greater scientific d iscoveries using the newfound understanding. Itââ¬â¢s just one example of how improving scientific understanding leads to new perceptions

The Theory Of Nature And Religious Belief Essay - 1041 Words
Benjamin Boateng Science is primarily based on study of nature and Religious belief are typically based on faith. Reaching a consensus is generally impossible. Natural science has had some vast majority of influence on religion. Scientific and evidence based rational notion has seen to be increasingly replacing religion. In the 21st century, while science has gained in influence and knowledge, I personally think religion has not been supersede. The idea that science and religion are at war with one another is actually fairly recent. It really only arose in the last third of the nineteenth century, after the publication of Darwin s book on evolution. In the wake of the furor over Darwin s idea that humans were descended from apes, some people on both sides tried to paint the other side as the enemy. Charles Darwin was the one that put forward the theory that all life evolves by processes of natural selection. According to Darwin, life began with very simple creatures, which gradually evolved over mill ions of years into more complex forms. Eventually this process gave rise to human beings. Likewise in the twentieth century, physicists and cosmologists have worked out a scientific account of how the universe came into being. Again, this account says that the universe came into being in a very simple state that gradually evolved over millions of years into ever more complex forms. Again, the process did not happen in a week, but over extremely long periods of time. In this paper we will discourse three engineerings that allow an person to research citizenââ¬â¢s private informations. and the advantages and disadvantages of public entree to this information. We will look at what it means for both the research workers and the person who are being investigated. What steps citizenââ¬â¢s can take from holding their private information from being disclosed? We will besides discourse what federal jurisprudence that grants the federal authorities the legal right to do private information on U. S. citizenââ¬â¢s available to the populace. In the yesteryear. entree to public records was confounding and expensive. BeenVerified purposes to interrupt this tendency by supplying non merely an low-cost pricing theoretical account but besides helpful client service along the manner ( World Wide Web. beenverified. com ) . This website claims to assist people in doing certain determinations on a roomie or information on a prospect employee. but who is to halt a individual from stalking another individual by utilizing this information they can acquire from this web site to their advantage? The other topographic point where authorities employeeââ¬â¢s information may be disbursed to anyone that may inquire for it is the Freedom of Information Act. The Freedom of Information Act ( FOIA ) is a jurisprudence that gives you the right to entree information from the federal authorities. It is frequently described as the jurisprudence that keeps citizens in the know about their authorities ( World Wide Web. foia. gov ) . I am presently a victim of this jurisprudence because I work for a federal company. They disclosed my wage. my old ages in the company and my location. This merely caused jobs within the organisation. because they could see what everyoneââ¬â¢s wage was and this caused animus. With the FOIA I tend to hold with the act. but I believe it besides causes a batch of jobs as good. The understanding I have with this act is citizens should cognize what is traveling on with the authorities and how they are passing money. If you are an employee of a authorities entity. so you are besides capable to hold certain information release. The job with this act can do animus within the workplace with employees can see what your wage is and fillip are. The other thing is how the media uses this information and the perceptual experience it can give to taxpaying citizens. Electronic Privacy Laws The Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the Stored Wire Electronic Communications Act are normally referred together as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 ( ECPA ) . The ECPA updated the Federal Wiretap Act of 1968. The older Wiretap Act had been written to turn to interception of conversations utilizing ââ¬Å"hardâ⬠telephone lines. The oncoming of computing machine and other digital and electronic communications prompted the demand to do the update. The USA PATRIOT Act and subsequent federal passages have clarified and updated the ECPA in visible radiation of the on-going development of modern communications engineerings and methods. including easing limitations on jurisprudence enforcement entree to stored communications in some instances ( World Wide Web. it. ojp. gov ) . In my sentiment I find the privateness Torahs to be nice. but all it takes is one person to chop a system and disburse information to whoever wants it. This has happen to several web s ites like Zappos. com and Google. where information on clients was stolen from their database. In the authorities sector it is truly unsafe for information to leak out since most authorities bureaus are connected and if you have a smart hacker he or she may acquire through to information that may be hurtful to the United States. Decision We have discussed the different topographic points that an person may be able to happen private information on another person. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of these sites let go ofing private information. We talked about what federal jurisprudence grants the federal authorities to let go of private information. Finally we discussed an electronic privateness jurisprudence called the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 ( ECPA ) . As clip goes on human existences are going brighter with engineerings to either cause bargain information for merriment. or to steal information to ache either a individual or company. The hope is that security engineering keeps up with these types of people. Mentions BeenVerified. ( n. d. ) . About Us. Mitosis and Protein Synthesis Essay Example
Mitosis and Protein Synthesis Essay The cell is absolutely a very sophisticated part of an organism. One instance that exemplifies this argument is that cells can produce protein. It isnââ¬Ët as simple as just making protein, and it involves decoding and transcribing DNA codes. Another illustration of this statement is that cells have the rare ability to duplicate themselves. Many types of cells, including human cells, use a process called mitosis, to generate clones. In this abridging essay, I will condense the complicated data we learned about these specific subjects. The first topic I will discuss is the replication procedure called mitosis. Mitosis is a cell division method that requires a certain sequence to be completed successfully. In mitosis, two new cells are created which have the same numbers and kinds of chromosomes as the original , or parent cell. The first step is called interphase. Interphase is the time period when the cell prepares for cell division, which means the cell makes copies of the chromosomes, and acquire nutrients. This is also considered the time when a cell carries out typical cell functions, such as protein synthesis and growth. The step subsequent to interphase is called prophase. In prophase, the chromotids(pairs of chromosomes) are fully viewable if observed through a microscope. The nucleus and nuclear membrane begin disintegrating and disappearing, while the centrioles shift to opposite sides of the cell. After prophase, the cell begins to divide. The steps following prophase are when the cell initiates the duplication process. Metaphase is the phase directly after prophase, in which the chromotids line up at the center of the cell and attach to the spindle fibers. After this step, anaphase commences. The anaphase is when the chromosomes separate from each other because of the spindle fibers pulling back. Telophase is the final step in mitosis, in which a new nucleus is formed and the cytoplasm starts separating. At the end of mitosis, the two new cells divide and pop, like jell-o. Another sophisticated process that happens in cells is protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is just a different way of saying how protein is produced. DNA is also called deoxyribonucleic acid, and contains encrypted information about how to produce proteins. The nitrogen bases in DNA are like puzzle pieces since they only fit to certain other bases(A-T,G-C). Proteins are long chains of amino acids. The types of proteins being made are what make your brown hair brown, or your blue eyes blue. RNA, is also called ribonucleic acid. There are 3 different types of RNA made from the DNA in a cell. mRNA is what transfers the DNA code from the nucleus to the ribosome. rRNA is what the ribosome is made of. tRNA is what brings amino acids from the cytoplasm to the ribosome. mRNA is different from DNA since Thymine is replaced by Uralic(A-U) in the mRNA code. At the ribosome, tRNA momentarily matches with the mRNA code. As the tRNA molecules decode the mRNA code, the amino acids attached to them connect and form the beginning of a protein. Those tRNA molecules then leave to retrieve more amino acids from the cytoplasm while the ribosome moves along so that new tRNA molecules can repeat the process and add to the protein molecule, which, again, is a long chain of amino acids. In short, that is the long coded protein forming process. Cell Division and Protein Synthesis are complex and elaborate parts of our biological structure. These functions are critical to the distinctive health of the human body. This was a fun topic to learn, and I hope to return to this subject of learning at any time. Thank you for taking time to read my longer than expected essay, and good-bye.

How to Be Successful in College
How to Be Successful in College Nearly every college student detests cram sessions. Intense, high-stress study sessions can have detrimental effects on both your GPA and your health. And while theres no guaranteed roadmap to success in college, changing your study habits and adjusting your approach to your classes can make a big difference. The following tips are a great place to start. Use Two Notebooks Bring one notebook with you to class, and use it to scratch and scribble down everything you can. It doesnââ¬â¢t need to look neat- it doesnââ¬â¢t even need to be legible. After class (within an hour or so), transfer your notes to your second notebook. Take your time with these notes: highlight key points, mark subject areas your professor emphasized, look up definitions, and record questions for the next lecture. The two-notebook method will help you retain information you might otherwise forget within days. Reviewing all the new material immediately after the lecture will keep it fresh in your mind. Plus, writing things down instead of typing them leads to better retention, according to the Scientific American. Find a Study Buddyà Make friends with someone in your class during the first week of the semester and schedule a regular study session. During your study sessions, review complicated chunks of information and explain them to each other. Think of the process like storytelling- turn your homework into stories, and tell those stories to each other. In addition to making a new friend, you and your study buddy will keep each other accountable all semester long.à Get Enough Sleep The importance of hydration, nutrition, and especially sleep cannot be overstated. Your ability to remember can drop by as much as 40 percent if you havenââ¬â¢t had adequate sleep. Aim to get adequate sleep as many nights as possible, and try to keep the same sleep schedule every night, even on weekends. Know When You Work Best Speaking of a sleep schedule, itââ¬â¢s important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all study schedule. There is plenty of research indicating benefits for both nighttime studying and early morning studying, so you shouldnt feel pressured to maintain an uncomfortable schedule. As long as you are getting enough sleep and keeping up with your commitments, your schedule is up to you. If you work late at night, make sure to give yourself space and time to sleep in every morning (dont sign up for 8 AM classes if you can help it). Not everyone is a morning person, and that is perfectly okay. Try The Pomodoro Methodà The Pomodoro Technique is a focusing method that relies on short bursts of intense work and plenty of breaks. To try the technique, set a timer for 25 minutes and work on a single task. When the timer rings, take a five-minute break, then set another 25 minute timer and get back to work. After four 25-minute intervals, take a longer break. You may find that the Pomodoro Method helps you get more done in a shorter period of time without feeling burnt out. Plus, short study breaks are known to improve concentration. Optimize Your Learning Style Figure out your learning style, then adapt your study techniques to suit that style. Remember to experiment with a few strategies to find what works best for you. If none of the three primary learning styles feel like a great fit, you might benefit from a study strategy that combines two different styles. Go to Office Hours And not just when youââ¬â¢re struggling. Open lines of communication with your professors early in the semester so that, when questions arise, your professor will know you have a vested interest in the class and the material. Developing strong relationships with faculty will also help you if you are considering applying for scholarships or you need letters of recommendation for graduate school. Bring Back Mario Kart Or, more specifically, integrate the music into your study sessions. Music enhances brain activity, and the video game music is specifically design to stimulate brain activity and keep you focused. The wordless, upbeat songs will keep you motivated without distracting you. Space Out Your Studying Spacing out your studying is beneficial for long term retention of the material. If you review your notes each day for 15 minutes, youll be able to retain what you learn in your classes for the long term. Try not to skip review days, or you risk losing what you have retained (especially if itââ¬â¢s new material). Sweat and Study There is a massive body of research that links exercise with good grades and improved learning and cognitive skills- especially if you exercise first and study second. If you are stuck in a study rut and your donââ¬â¢t have time to hit the gym, go for a quick walk. Fresh air and a change in environment will help you create connections and solve problems. Change Locations If youre struggling to focus in your study space, try studying in different locations. For some learners, a change in location builds stronger connections to the material that arenââ¬â¢t dependent on the location where they were originally learned; as a result, the information is more easily recalled later. Consider a Part-Time Job If youââ¬â¢re having trouble managing your study time, you might think getting a job will only compound the problem. However, research suggests that students who work part-time jobs while in school tend to get better grades because the experience improves time management skills.

Cyberspace and American Dreams essays
Cyberspace and American Dreams essays A Magna Carta of the Information Age" Though reading this article and the class discussions, I felt that this was a very interesting article. Here we strayed into a very grey area of todays cyberspace domain. How do we institute rules and regulations to apply to the Internet? But more interesting to me was the discussion of this article about teachers using technology and where the class room is headed. If you divide the two so called groups you have the second wave teachers and the third wave teachers. The majority of classes which are offered on campus now come for second wave teachers. Teachers who use very little modern day technology in their class are the second wave. It seems that in a majority of classes that I have taken over the past three years, few teachers use the technology at their finger tips. They stick to the fashion of writing on the board or using basic overheads for notes. Little do they realize that there are so many more unexplored opportunities to communicate their knowledge to the classroom. Simple animations included into a PowerPoint presentation would become more valuable than simple note taking. This way the student could see what the professor is actually talking about, the student could see the object in the animation and would reference the meanings easier. Like what Dr. Davis said the first class, if you can see, interact, and discuss you retain 90% of the knowledge learned, compared to a simple 10% while taking notes. If the education department at the college required making the professors use modern technology in their lectures, the overall student GPA would probably rise. Students should be able to customize the ways that they learn, not have to adapt to what others want us to learn. Currently, there should be no reason why we havent already established this feat. The technology is there for students to earn different degrees from schools across the ...

The research paper being summarized in this report is In vitro activities of synthetic host defense propeptides processed by neutrophil elastase against cystic fibrosis pathogens authored by Stephen Desgranges, Florie Le Prieult, Alan Dalyââ¬â¢ Jeniffer Lydon, Marian Brennan, Dilip K. Rai, Anusha P. Subasinghage, Chandralal M. Hewage, Sally-Ann Cryan, Catherine Greene, Noel G. McElvaney, Timothy P. Symth and Marc Devocelle. This paper was published in the journal Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy under the American society for microbiology on May 2011. The journal has an impact factor of 4.672, a respectable impact factor for any reputable journal. Publishing of the work was significant to shed light on light on activities of synthetic host defense propeptides firsthand and hinder other person/groups doing so first. The Desgranges et al have undertaken a study where they have reported the in vitro activities of synthetic host defense propeptides against cystic pathogens namely Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosaà [2]. This paper focuses on the effect of modifying the propeptide by reducing the net change on the antimicrobial and haemolytic activity. The aim of this work by Desgranges et al was to utilize the abnormal amounts of neutrophil elastase present in cystic fibrosis to process several synthetic prodrugs against common pathogens in cystic fibrosis, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus [2]. Peptides are present in many living systems and are utilized by the innate immune systems to combat invading pathogens. Therefore this study aims at constructing a propeptide that will be able to evade the host immune system and also be a substrate for the all abundant neutrophil elastase present in cystic fibrosis lung. Since peptides
